Exploring Careers in Health Occupations

Exploring Careers in Health Occupations (ECHO) is a health careers exploration program that provides fun, interactive, multi-disciplinary experiences through a variety of learning opportunities to high school students who are interested in pursuing careers in health care.

WHAT STUDENTS HAVE TO SAY:

"The forensics presentation was so cool. I loved everything she said. I loved interacting with the nursing home residents."

"I liked that we got some hands-on experience in the school of nursing."

ECHO is the only summer residential program in the Western Maryland region that provides interactive experiences and exposure to a broad spectrum of health careers.  As an AHEC West signature health careers pipeline program, now in its 13th year, ECHO provides high schoolers hands-on experiences while exploring a wide variety of health careers. Ideally, ECHO encourages students pursuing a career in the health professions to return to a rural community to practice, a community preferably located in the Western Maryland region.

ECHO experiences include adventurous team building activities such as zip lining and white water rafting; tours at University of Maryland Medical Center and School of Medicine in Baltimore and the West Virginia University Health Sciences Center; interactions with practitioners, technicians, and a variety of health care employees; visits with local health departments, hospitals, and private physicians’ offices; hands-on experience with surgical simulators; engagement in leadership training; learning the steps needed to prepare for college; and experiencing a taste of college life by living in a dorm throughout the program.

It’s a fun and exciting week!
