On June 20 AHEC West hosted its Annual Dinner and Awards Ceremony, honoring area health professionals who go above and beyond to serve residents of Western Maryland and surrounding counties.
Held at Rocky Gap Casino Resort, the event featured 11 awards recognizing nurses, nurse practitioners, social workers, dietitians, psychologists, and other outstanding health professionals.
Those in attendance included state lawmakers, county commissioners, representatives of Maryland’s two U.S. senators, and business and educational leaders from Western Maryland.
Susan Stewart, executive director of Cumberland-based AHEC West, commended the award winners, saying they serve as exemplary role models and mentors for others who strive to meet the region’s pressing healthcare needs. “These health professionals are the best of the best,” she said. “We are deeply honored to recognize their contributions to the quality of life in our Appalachian region.”

Allegany-Garrett Social Worker of the Year Award: Carolyn Clauson-Andrews
Fred Hirsch Social Worker of the Year Award: Connie Robin Secrist
Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award: Janell Sioma and Kelly Rock
Dietitian of the Year Award: Marcy Etherson
Psychologist of the Year Award: Paul McCusker
ECHO Mentor of the Year Award: Rob Boyle, PT and Rehab 1st
John M. Dennis Award: Jacqueline Mitchell
Excellence in Geriatric & Gerontology Award: Meritus Health Education Department
Jane A. Fiscus Community Health Leadership Award: Fred Tola
Distinguished Service Award: Thomas E. Chappell

AHEC West Awards Criteria


John M. Dennis Award

This award is presented in honor of John M. Dennis, MD, Vice Chancellor for Health and Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland at Baltimore from 1977 until 1988 whose visionary and dedicated support made possible the development of the AHEC West program and this Center.
 
Recipients of this award are usually university representatives who have made noteworthy contributions to off-campus health professional education in Western Maryland through outstanding leadership, ingenuity and advocacy, and dedication.
 
Initiated in 1988, the Dennis Award replaced a previous award honoring outstanding UMB off-campus leadership.

Award for Distinguished Service

An award presented to individuals who have contributed outstanding, dedicated service to the organization and to interdisciplinary education for health professionals in Western Maryland.

Fiscus Award

This award recognizes the significant contributions to community health care made by health care providers and/or citizens in Western Maryland who exemplify the principles of leadership, coordination of services, interdisciplinary training, foresight, courage, and creativity championed and demonstrated by Jane A. Fiscus, M.D.

Donald L. Spencer Award

The Donald L. Spencer Award is given periodically to exceptional individuals who embody a rare degree of organizational dedication and commitment to the values and ideals that Don Spencer represented.

Nurse Practitioner of the Year Award

Nominees must be licensed as a nurse practitioner, have made specific outstanding contributions to the profession, display leadership in the profession, earn the respect of fellow nurse practitioners and co-workers, represent the professional ethics of our work, and practice in Allegany, Garrett, or Washington County.

Nurse of the Year Award
Nominees must be licensed as a nurse, have made specific outstanding contributions to the profession, displayed leadership, earned the respect of fellow nurses and co-workers, and represented the professional ethics of our work. The nominee must be a member of the AHEC West Nursing Caucus or Maryland Nurses Association, and practice in Allegany or Garrett County.

Dietitian of the Year Award
Nominees must be registered and/or licensed dietitians, have made specific outstanding contributions to the profession, display leadership in the profession, earn the respect of fellow dietitians and nutritionists, represent professional ethics, and preferably is a current caucus member.

Social Worker of the Year Award
Nominees must be licensed social workers in the state of Maryland, have made specific outstanding contributions to the profession, display leadership in the profession, earn the respect of fellow social workers, and represent the professional ethics of social work practice.  Nominees should be an active member of an AHEC West Social Work Caucus.
